27 years seems like a lifetime. Russian Poet Lermontov, for example, had only 27 years to live his full of beautiful poetry life...Today, 27 years ago, my wonderful friend Natalie came into my life to grace it with her presence, kindness and beauty. I remember the first time I saw Natalie. It was one of the those cold, gray February days with no promise of sunshine.
I spotted Natalie sitting on the bench with a paper bag full of hard candy. She was wearing devastatingly crimson pants - I was literally hypnotized by the color. :-) I sat down next to her and for the next hour we enjoyed candy together in complete silence. We were 8 years old.
When we were 10, Natalie decided that when she will grow up, she will be a poet. Meanwhile, I was still dreaming of being ballerina. Natalie wrote hundreds of poems small ones and long ones - all equally brilliant to my 10 year old mind. Here is one of Natalie's poems: "The sky is gray, the star is falling, I am forever lost in flavor of this salad." :-)))
When we were 12, Natalie discovered her passion for sewing clothes. As a gift for my Birthday Natalie created a very special pair of pants for me - red with navy blue plaid, wide leg trousers I thought were the most fashionable thing I have ever seen. I wore it to school and was sent home by our very strict principle for wearing "rebellious clothes". :-)))
When we were 14, Natalie had a brilliant idea! Bangs! In Pink!!! How could I not try it!? We both cut our bangs and colored it pink and both were grounded by our parents for weeks. Not being able to call each other during this time, Natalie send me a letter with the picture of Catherine Deneuve: " To be beautiful, you must suffer inconveniences." :-)
At 15 we decided to run away from home, to travel to Poland and Germany by foot. We almost made it to Poland, but were stopped by police and returned home where our very upset parents grounded us once again for a very, very, VERY long time.
At 16 we were full of dreams. Natalie outgrew her desire to be a poet and decided to be a doctor instead. I had to say "good by" to my ballerina dreams and decided to be a teacher of English. We both graduated from high school and were accepted to the University following Summer. Natalie went on to graduate with a degree in Medicine, she became an endocrinologist, I became a teacher.
At 19 Natalie fell in love and got married. She was the most amazing bride, so beautiful, it took my breath away. Her marriage did not last long and she went on to marry 4 more times before she found her true love. I called her my very own Miss. Elizabeth Taylor. :-)))
At 32 Natalie received devastating news - she was diagnosed with cancer. She fought like a lioness through 3 surgeries and four courses of chemotherapy. She lost all her beautiful hair, but she never lost her spirit and hope. Natalie won the battle: cancer retreated and Natalie went into remission. She is perfectly healthy now. :-)Some of this pictures are courtesy wonderful Dustjacket Attic.

Chère Anya, your words Truly sound as such a sensitive rhetorical Tribute : your text reflects such a deep sororal symbiosis, highly dedicated to ignore life's whims and contingencies !!!

Bonjour Dear Anya,
Oh what a marvelous tribute to Natalie. The way you describe her I can just see her, the two of your must have be quite a pair - I can see you now heading to Poland,a dn the pink bangs.
I am so happy she is well and happy now. How lucky to find a true friend.
WOnderful week to you.
Wonderful story !
I was afraid it was going to end unhappily.
I'm so pleased your friend is well.
Anya......
I'm so emotionally touched by this most wonderful declaration of true love, friendship and strong bond to Natalie. I enjoyed reading it so very much, it was/is like taking us once again through a journey through your life. How sweet when you met for the first time - and how lovely her first steps in writing poems, I like the quoted short poem so very much :) Quite unusual for an eight-ten year old girl, she sounds there already unique and mature.
And so the story of your friendship continued and stayed alive and connected with an even stronger bond than ever aftter 27 years. That's so rare. Such a precious gift. That's so amazing to have such a true soulmate :)
And so I was sitting here, watching all the beautiful pictures and after one of them suddenly "cancer" popped up and I was so very shocked.....
And then so very delighted to read that all went well and that Natalie, a great woman and friend - and a strong fighter - is alright.
Thanks so much for this wonderful posting, dear Anya. Thanks for introducing us to an important part of your life.
Such a touching and beautiful post! Thank you for sharing this piece on your wonderful friendship and I'm so glad that she managed to survive cancer and found true love after all those marriages :) There's definitely nothing that surpasses having a life-long friend! And I adore the selection of images you chose to go with this!
this is sooo beautiful anya!
what a lovely post, i know my best friend for almost 19 years now, and i'm so glad to have her in my life, so i totally feel every word you wrote :)
Oh Anechka... I could write a lot here, but I will keep it short... She is a very very lucky girl to have a friend like you and you are very lucky to have met a girl like her. True friendship is a very precious gift and to keep it for as long as you did just make it even more unique. And I also felt somehow priviledged to share my name with your best friend.
Tried to translate the "Salad poem" to see how it would sound in Russian... :) I came up with "na temnom nebe zvezda upala, i ya navsegda v salate propala" :))) Although then I visited your Russian blog and saw the original. :) You know, reading the same story in Russian had a different influence on me.. Even the "one needs to suffer to be beautiful" sounded more native, the way I used to hear it when I was back in Russia... And the pants and zavuch story... :)
Oh, yes I have to say that photos you chose for this post are truly gorgeous... And I adore a picture of very young Nadja Auerman, she looks so innocent on it, not a typical platinum bomb lady vamp we are so used to. :)
Wishing you a wonderful week, darling!
Lots of kisses.
LR
Oooh Anya..
what can I say....
you have always a wonderful way to write in your posts but this one here is truly so very touching!
I loved to read every single sentence to follow your relationship with your one-of-a-kind best friend Natalie. And Natalie is so lucky to know such a wonderful friend who cares so much like you do.
But my words simply cannot express the friendship through the years between you two!
I wish you 2 sweethearts the most wonderful years of friendship for the future; it´s like a big treasure!
I´m so touched I forgot all the photos you´ve posted ;))
Congratulations on your newest Chanel treasure.
I also thought the Lanvin bride was a little bit overpriced. Awwwh... Anya, I´m so excited and can´t wait until you share them;)
Sending you million-trillion hugs & kisses and
wishing you a special "friendship-day".

I am glad she is better now, cancer can be so devastating. :-)

So tragic and beautiful, all in one. Your friendship is so awe inspiring, especially to me, who has had good friends drift in and out of my lives, but never drift out of my heart. Your saga of a marvelous friendship is only made sweeter by Natalie beating her cancer. She is a fighter, and I'm sure your support through it all was never lost on her, as it is not lost on your readers. This was just a truly beautiful post.

Anya,
I sat on the edge of my seat, reading every word. Your writing is so beautifully descriptive, so full of both passion and compassion, and deeply touching. What a beautiful thing to have a friendship this strong and this true....and someone who has shared every high and low in life with you. I felt emotional and so sad when you mentioned cancer, and how brave and strong is she for fighting, experiencing such a terrifying hardship, and coming out on top! How wonderful to hear that she is perfectly healthy now, and look how much stronger she and you both are because of the challenges that life has brought.
Thank you so much for sharing this, really touched me.
Love ♥
Rachel
Beautiful word Anya...(my english is not so good for what I cannot explain to me well).
Your words have thrilled me very much, it is a nice declaration of friendship, Natali has a great friend!!!
This is such a beautiful post. I read it and so many memories were unlocked. you mentioned your very unhappy first marriage, so you can probably understand what I am going through. In all this, my dearest friends have stood by my side. So I know that a good friend is the best gift life can give you.
I remember the night I spent weeping and my best friends stayed awake, taking care of me, helping me heal, loving me as I no longer imagined myself as being worthy of love. And that night, the idea of Lifein2suitcases was born.
Thank you for refreshing those memories. you and you friend are truly blessed to have this bond. Here is to many more years of this lovely friendship.
Sounds like a fabulous friend! x

P.S. I love your daughter's name. My mom almost named me Anastasia. I've always thought it was so romantic.
This is such a special post. You remind us of some of the most important things in life and how quickly a life can grow. I'm sure it feels like just yesterday you met Natalie. One thing I know is that she loved you just as much as you love her.
